Issue #3 - June 22-28, 2026.

This Week’s Big Move

Every Agent Framework Shipped the Same Week

Something unusual happened in the last seven days. Vercel shipped AI SDK 7 with durable agent execution. Cursor shipped cloud subagents and a mobile app to manage them. Microsoft shipped three Copilot agents that run live debuggers and profilers without human input. Pydantic AI hit v2 with MCP integration and a gateway proxy. And OpenAI previewed GPT-5.6 Sol, a three-model family whose headline feature is ultra mode, where the model orchestrates its own subagents.

That’s not a coincidence. It’s a land grab for the agent execution layer.

The pattern across all of them is identical: agents that run in isolated environments (VMs, worktrees, containers), checkpoint their progress so they survive crashes, and produce reviewable artifacts instead of chat responses. Diffs. PRs. Test results. Six months ago, “agent” meant “a model that calls tools in a loop.” This week’s releases redefine it as “a durable background process with its own compute.”

The practical question is which layer you bet on. If you’re in TypeScript, AI SDK 7 is the obvious starting point (16M weekly downloads, one-command migration from v6). If you’re in Python, Pydantic AI v2 just leapfrogged LangGraph on typed outputs and observability. If you don’t want a framework at all, Cursor’s /in-cloud and VS 2026’s Cloud Agent both let you dispatch work without writing orchestration code.

Either way, the era of babysitting agents in a terminal tab is ending fast.

Tools & Agent Updates

Vercel AI SDK 7. WorkflowAgent brings durable execution with checkpointing, so agents survive disconnects and resume where they left off. HarnessAgent wraps Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and Pi behind one API, letting you swap harnesses without rewriting orchestration. Real-time voice is now provider-agnostic. MCP Apps integration ships natively. Migration from v6: npx @ai-sdk/codemod v7. Run it this week if you haven’t already.

Cursor 3.9 + iOS Public Beta. Version 3.9 consolidates plugins, MCPs, subagents, skills, and hooks into a single Customize page with team-scoped sharing and a marketplace leaderboard. Cloud subagents via /in-cloud spin up isolated VMs so long tasks don’t block your editor. The iOS app (public beta, all paid plans) lets you launch cloud agents from your phone, review diffs, and merge PRs on the go. If you manage agents across multiple repos, the mobile review flow alone justifies the install.

Pydantic AI v2. AG-UI protocol support, durable execution, full MCP integration, and a unified cross-language evals library. PydanticAI Gateway adds a proxy layer with per-project spend caps and a full audit trail via OpenTelemetry. If you’ve been duct-taping LiteLLM proxies to LangGraph chains, this is the integrated replacement.

Visual Studio 2026 June Update. VS 18.6 introduces three Copilot agents that execute, not just suggest. @debugger runs live debug sessions against real runtime telemetry. @profiler benchmarks .NET code and validates its own fixes. Cloud Agent runs bounded tasks on GitHub Actions and opens PRs while the IDE is closed. Microsoft is betting that agents belong inside the IDE, not in a separate terminal.

What to watch

  • GPT-5.6 Sol/Terra/Luna (Jun 26). Three tiers: Sol (flagship, ~$20/1M input, ultra subagent mode), Terra (GPT-5.5 performance at half cost), Luna (fast/cheap for high-volume loops). New SOTA on Terminal-Bench 2.1 for command-line coding. Limited partner preview now, broad API rollout in weeks. OpenAI
  • Ornith-1.0 (Jun 25). Open-source coding model family (MIT license). 9B dense to 397B MoE, built on Gemma 4 and Qwen 3.5 bases. Scores 82.4 on SWE-Bench Verified, which puts the 397B variant in Opus 4.7 territory. The 9B model fits a single consumer GPU. Unlike fixed-harness models, it learns to write its own agent scaffold during RL training. MarkTechPost
  • Gemini Interactions API GA (Jun 22). Google’s primary Gemini interface is now production-ready. Managed Agents provision a remote Linux sandbox with one API call. Background async execution, mixed tool calls, and a Flex tier at 50% off Priority pricing. SDKs for Python and JS. Google

What This Means For You

Pick your agent framework now, or the market picks for you. AI SDK 7 and Pydantic AI v2 both shipped MCP support, durable execution, and spending controls in the same week. They’re converging on the same feature set from TypeScript and Python respectively. If you’re building agents without a framework, you’re reimplementing checkpointing and cost tracking that these libraries handle out of the box. Run npx @ai-sdk/codemod v7 or pip install pydantic-ai>=2.0 and save yourself the plumbing.

MCP keeps winning. AI SDK 7 ships MCP Apps natively. Cursor 3.9 puts MCPs front and center in its Customize page. Azure Functions’ MCP extension now supports tool, resource, and prompt triggers across multiple languages (15x volume growth in six months). OpenRouter launched an MCP server that gives agents live model pricing and benchmark data. If you have internal tools that agents should be able to call, publish them as MCP servers. The integration cost is now lower than maintaining custom tool definitions.

Open-source coding models deserve a real eval. Ornith-1.0’s 9B variant fits a single GPU and scores competitively on SWE-Bench. HuggingFace’s new one-command vLLM server launch on HF Jobs means spinning up an OpenAI-compatible inference endpoint takes one CLI call. If you’re running agent loops where the per-token cost adds up (test generation, large refactors, CI agents), benchmark Ornith-9B against your current model. You might not need a frontier model for every task.

  • Claude Tag - Claude joins Slack channels as a persistent team member via @mentions. Anthropic says 65% of its product code is now AI-generated internally.
  • Stably Orca - Open-source IDE (MIT) for running fleets of coding agents in parallel worktrees. Supports 30+ CLI agents. Design Mode sends UI element screenshots into agent prompts.
  • OpenRouter MCP Server - Give your agents live model pricing, benchmarks, and per-provider latency via MCP. OAuth auth, $10 spend cap.
  • GitHub Desktop 3.6 - Native worktree support for parallel-branch workflows. AI merge conflict resolution. Model picker for commit messages.
  • Capital One Context Specs - Open-source spec-driven development framework. Multi-agent validation with three independent reviewers before implementation.
  • gstack - Garry Tan’s Claude Code config: 23 tools and 6 personas (CEO, Designer, QA, etc.) simulating an engineering org. The “team-in-a-box” pattern.
  • Vercel Ship 2026 Recap - Full rundown of everything announced at Ship London. Agent Stack, AI Gateway voice support, enterprise private deployment on AWS.

Glossary

AG-UI (Agent-User Interface) - An emerging protocol for structured communication between AI agents and frontend interfaces. Defines how agents report progress, request approvals, and stream partial results to UIs.

Durable execution - Agent runs that survive crashes, disconnects, and restarts. The agent checkpoints its state, so it picks up where it left off instead of starting over. The same concept as durable workflows (Temporal, Inngest) applied to AI agents.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) - An open protocol that lets AI models call external tools and data sources through a standard interface. Think USB-C for AI: one plug, any tool.

MoE (Mixture of Experts) - An architecture where only a fraction of the model’s parameters activate per request. “397B MoE, 9B active” means trillion-scale knowledge at 9B compute cost.

SWE-Bench - A benchmark that tests whether a model can resolve real GitHub issues by generating working patches. “Verified” is the human-validated subset. Scores above 80 are competitive with frontier models.

Worktree - A Git feature that creates a separate working copy of your repo without a full clone. Allows for multiple agents (or humans) to work on different branches simultaneously without conflicts.
